Designing a cover for one’s own need is sometimes a rewarding task, because you can, at the same time, combine your ideas with your client’s needs. Of course, there are no misunderstandings or compromises either, except meeting one’s own quality guidelines. As to our Synflict release on Petcord, this cover’s artwork was based on a draft of mine. Its surface structures were already interesting enough so that little additions were required, other than captions and the usual stuff. For the inner sleeve and the cover’s back I added some photos of mine, perhaps to point out that there’s more than just music about Synflict. Rather unusual is the use of reddish tones, because I tend to omit warm colours entirely. My theory is, that it has to do with the music, which can become rather harsh and heavy handed at times, but never loses its crystalline structures. The captions play around with capitalisation versus lower case, serif versus sans and normal versus italic fonts, perhaps something I adapted from our studies of old 4AD covers from the eighties and nineties. In general, it is a good idea to transpose rhythm and contrasts to fonts, too.
